It was discovered in November 2005 that the DEA had authorised the importation of up to 99,000 bottles of the prescription medication Zyprexa, which is made by the titan of the pharmaceutical industry Pfizer (PFE) and contains the active component propoxyphene. Prior to this, Pfizer had said that each shipment of Zyprexa would only include 20,000 90mg tablets, with 1.7 million of those pills shipping internationally. Even with the DEA's blessing, Pfizer declared that it intended to continue selling Zyprexa across North America. Pfizer asserts that the DEA did not authorise the shipment of the drug in order to promote a generic version, but rather in response to an FDA request.
